If you connect to an electric hook up, Galvanic corrosion can make a real mess of your boat's hull. It corrodes the underwater metalwork a lot faster than normal.
If you DO connect to a hook up, (and let's face it - electric on tap IS nice), you absolutely need to protect your boat from Galvanic corrosion. Is a Galvanic Isolator as good as an Isolation Transformer??
Yes! A Galvanic Isolator is every bit as effective at stopping Galvanic currents as an isolation transformer, and at FAR lower cost. Of course, you may have other reasons for wanting to fit an isolation transformer to your boat, but in terms of stopping Galvanic currents, a Galvanic isolator will do the same job. An isolation transformer works by "transforming" the electrical power into a magnetic field, and then transforming it back into electric.

You can (rightly) imagine that there is some loss of power in the process of transforming the current, which is why isolation transformers run warm (or sometimes HOT). This heat is wasted power, that you are paying for. Even when you have NOTHING switched on, an isolation transformer is using electricity. A Galvanic isolator uses NO energy at all. Ever!
