Don’t Let Shore Power Turn Your Boat into Scrap

galvanic isolator protecting boat in marina

When you hook your boat up to shore power, you also connect it to every other boat and bit of metal on the marina  – and that’s where galvanic corrosion starts. Tiny DC currents creep along the earth conductor in the hook‑up cable, attacking your hull, prop and stern gear, and chewing through anodes far faster than they should.

A galvanic isolator stops those stray currents in their tracks. It connects into the earth line and creates a protective electrical “barrier” between your boat and the shore, so normal AC mains power flows as usual, but the low‑voltage corrosion currents are blocked. The result: your hull and underwater fittings are protected, and your anodes last much longer.

Despite the important job it does, a galvanic isolator is simple, low‑cost bit of kit that you can fit yourself in seconds. Simply plug it inline with your shore power lead – no electrician required – and you’ve resolved one of the biggest hidden threats to your boat.

If you’re connected to a marina supply and don’t already have a galvanic isolator, now is the ideal time to add one and safeguard your pride & joy.
