If you’re leaving your boat connected to an electric hook-up over winter, galvanic corrosion can become a costly problem. While your boat is plugged into the marina mains supply, low-level galvanic currents can travel through the shore-power earth connection and eat away at a steel or aluminium hull, underwater fittings and sacrificial anodes. On GRP boats, the same process can attack stern gear, including stern drives, outboards, propellers and other underwater metalwork.
Galvanic corrosion can be a serious problem, particularly when a boat is left connected for weeks or months at a time. Anodes may disappear far more quickly than expected, and corrosion can take place unnoticed below the waterline. Earth leakage is even more serious: unlike normal low-level galvanic currents, it can cause rapid corrosion of a hull or stern gear in a very short time.
The simple answer is a galvanic isolator. Fitted in the earth lead of your shore-power connection, it blocks the small galvanic currents that cause corrosion, while still allowing the safety earth to do its job. This helps protect your hull, underwater metalwork and anodes while the boat remains connected to mains power.
Our Plug-In Galvanic Isolators are the quickest and easiest option to fit. Simply plug the isolator into the marina supply, then plug your existing electric hook-up lead into it. There is no wiring, no electrical knowledge required and no tools needed — the whole job takes just a few seconds. It is an easy way to help your anodes last longer and reduce the risk of expensive corrosion damage over the winter.
